The Maspalomas dunes at the southern tip of the island are undoubtedly one of the most famous landmarks in Gran Canaria and attract thousands of visitors each year.
It is like having the purest desert in our home.
Pure sands that only the wind shapes and an immense ocean forming the strange landscape of the most authentic beauty.
This landscape, reminiscent of the nearby Sahara, was almost destroyed by the uncontrolled development of tourism in the 1960s and 1970s.
In the hitherto almost intact terrain of Maspalomas and its dunes, there was a sudden and strong intervention.
The migration of the dunes was disturbed by development, the increasing number of visitors led to the migration of numerous species of birds.

Trash left and sewage dumped exacerbated the problems.
What many visitors do not consider is that the dunes are not only an area of great recreational value and tourist interest, but also a unique natural area in the Canary Islands.
Just in time, the dunes were declared a nature reserve of national importance in 1987.
In 1994 additional measures were taken to protect the dunes and an area of 403 hectares was elevated to the category of "important nature reserve".
Maspalomas, its pond and the lighthouse from the idyllic landscape of serenity and temperance, Bathing in its waters, walking through the dunes and even the exotic desert that are offered to us on camels, give us that dreamy and beauty picture of a place full of emotions.
