PUERTO DE LAS NIEVES AGAETE
Panoramic view of Puerto De Las Nieves
In this area of Agaete, a dock and shelter area for walking and transit boats was built, a dock for the yet-foil line, ferries and catamarans that could connect in a straight line and in less time the neighboring islands, Gran Canaria and Tenerife.
This dock has been a great help for the La Luz dock, as well as for loading and unloading trade between islands.
The hermitage of Las Nieves is another of the jewels of the place, a triptych of Flemish painting from the 16th century, with images of the birth of the Child Jesus, of incalculable value.
Possibly it arrived in those Dutch ships that passed by and were heading to America, at that time the native Canaries could have been exchanged for fresh fruits, against the scurvy disease that always occurs when not consuming fresh fruits in so much time of crossing. The same would happen in another case, another triptych that reached the Canary Islands, Tenerife, the coastal town of Taganana, where another example of Flemish painting is also preserved.
The coast of Agaete is magical in terms of ancestral festivities: the La Rama festival. In it, people went in jumps and dances to the summit and there they collected fresh branches from the mountain, branches to lift in dances and jumps and go down again from the summit to the shore, to the beach of Puerto de las Nieves today .
To reach the sea, get into the waters and hit the surface of the sea with the branches, asking the sky and the gods for it to rain. Agaete and its coast are part of a town of sea and mountains.
The inland area, Umbria and the Valley deserve special mention for their coffee plantations, sugar cane, avocados, pineapples, papayas and mangoes. The Agaete water source, hot springs and where it gave rise to the creation of a hotel for its health baths is very interesting.
The waters were industrialized and bottled in three-quarters tanks, they were very famous for their iron flavor, and the completely cinnamon bottles for their minerals, "iron-clad" waters very important for health. Agaete continues to maintain a valley full of fruits and such emotional beauty that "the Flower Garden" was created, the site of a very interesting collection of plants from many parts of the world, a small botanical garden for the enjoyment of locals and others. Used for rest and walks and also as an enclave place for an annual event of culture and good taste: the recital of poets from all the islands.
Always open to bringing together the cream of Canarian culture, let's not forget that Tomás Morales was a doctor in Agaete and that Alonso de Quesada used to spend the summer to cure his bronchial problems, that Saulo Torón himself traveled to be there with his friends, today immortalized in the Walk of the Three Poets ???.
This northern coast is always open to all visitors today, with fresh fish and wafer seafood restaurants; Open-air market that runs along the promenade with an infinity of stalls of Canarian, African and Latin products. A beach for the enjoyment of bathers and athletes and a dock suitable for the island's transit and commercial needs. Agaete is the jewel of the north. You can not miss it.
